About data collected by Open Map Lebanon

OML collects and aggregates various types of third party and NGO data as part of different initiatives and projects. We built tools that allow these NGOs to provide us with their public data, ensuring that all private information remains private. The data is then processed and consolidated into one single shared database accessible by authorized users (e.g., NGO officiers); a subset of data strictly necessary for needs assessments is displayed on a public interactive map.The NGOs we partner with are well-established organizations directly involved in the Beirut relief efforts. OML has data sharing agreements with each entity enabling us access to up-to-date information on a daily basis. We operate under the principle of data minimization and endeavor to limit the collection of data or information that is not directly relevant and necessary to accomplish our goals, including sensitive information or Personally Identifiable Information (PII). We work closely with third parties and NGOs to ensure any such data remains in their custody and is not transmitted to OML.

Purpose for data collection & sharing

The benefits of open data in supporting development goals are widespread, from increasing the quality, efficiency, and transparency of public services, to promoting economic growth through innovative services and new business models. Specifically, OML seeks to facilitate access to data through aggregation while contributing to enriching Lebanon’s inherently poor data landscape. Our immediate focus is to provide NGOs, surveyors, and other entities with as much standardized and centralized information as possible to enable them to effectively and efficiently allocate relief efforts OML is aware that supporting open data may enable adversarial entities to attempt to use our published data in ways that we do not endorse or that are not aligned to our core mission. However, we believe the benefits of open data widely outweigh the potential.
