About Mapillary
Mapillary is the street-level imagery platform that scales and automates mapping using collaboration, cameras, and computer vision. We are mobilising volunteers to help us take pictures of damaged buildings in affected streets, or upload their own pictures to the app. The goal is to build a comprehensive images database to document this event, as well as enable relief and reconstruction efforts such as damage assessment.
Getting Started
1. Download the Mapillary app and create a username and password.
2. Share your account details on the Mapillary Beirut Response Whatsapp group so we add you to the Beirut Response team.
3. Once you have been added, select the Beirut Response team when taking photos (under the Capture section).
Note: Make sure the GPS location is on when taking pictures.
4. Start taking photos of buildings as you walk / from a car.
5. When you reconnect to wifi, open Mapillary and go to the Upload section and click the upload button to upload your selected pictures, or to delete unwanted pictures.
Tips for Taking Photos
• On the Mapillary app, you can see where people already submitted imagery.
• Click on the capture section. Then click the red button to start taking photos while walking. It automatically takes one photo every second or so. You can adjust that in the settings depending if you're driving or walking.
• Make sure you get the whole building in view when you're taking photos. So you can only take one side of the street at a time.
• If possible, try doing a diagonal shot of the building. For example, if you are walking on the right side of the street, point your camera 45o to left of straight ahead, and then have it capture on a time interval e.g. 2-4 seconds sequence.
Uploading Existing Photos
1. Open Mapillary on your desktop.
2. Login to your account. If you don’t have one yet, create it & join our Whatsapp group.
3. Once you’re added, go back to Mapillary & select Upload from the left-hand side menu. Select Beirut Response to upload your content to the right place.
4. Choose the location of your photos. After processing, you’ll see a green dot representing your photos on the map. Move the dot around to select the exact location of the buildings you took a picture of.
5. Click on the Publish button to finalise the process.
